Powering booking and miles across 140+ airlines

Rove is a travel product where the booking flow and the loyalty currency are the same system. I architected flight and hotel booking from scratch and own the payments and miles engine that sits underneath it. Between them they carry transactions worth tens of millions of dollars a year for hundreds of thousands of travellers, which sets the reliability bar for everything below.

Underneath booking sits an aggregator layer that puts every hotel and flight provider behind one API. Suppliers disagree about what a fare is, respond at wildly different speeds, and fail in their own particular ways; normalising them in one place is what makes provider failover and best-price selection possible at all, rather than something each caller reimplements.

Booking across 140+ airlines means every request fans out to those suppliers. Search, hold, price confirmation, payment authorisation and ticketing are modelled as durable Temporal workflows, so a supplier timing out halfway through does not strand a traveller with a charged card and no ticket — the workflow resumes or compensates.

The miles engine moves points across 20+ loyalty programmes spanning all three airline alliances — Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Miles & More, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, JAL and Accor among them. Each has its own transfer semantics, settlement timing and reconciliation rules, and points are real value, so every movement is idempotent and auditable end to end. The service runs across GCP and AWS with end-to-end tracing through Datadog APM.

Outside my own services I contribute backend work and architectural review to the Shopping team, and wrote the engineering-wide coding standards the teams build against.
